@freshfreenlovinit The speed of sound is not constant to all observers.A jet pilot flying at Mach 1 measures the front of his sound wave standing still, and the back wave moving away from him at twice the speed of sound. The wave is expanding sphere with a plane on it's edge.This is completely different from the light wave emitted by the plane lights. That wave always has the same shape - expanding sphere, with the pilot at the center - regardless of the speed that the plane moves.

@Manoo62 I originally said and still say light does not gain momemtum. You seem to imply that I've changed my mind but I'm not sure what you're saying I've changed it about. I accept that it behaves like sound but I never said it didn't behave like sound - they're both waves, albeit with differences but also with similarities - they both emanate from a source. A video is exactly that - a video, it is not the gospel truth. I don't offer explanations for something I see on a video.

@freshfreenlovinit You originally said that light was not effected when emitted from a moving object but now you accept that it behaves very similar to sound which we can measure more easily.Einsteins theory of special relativity explains why two observers see the same event in DIFFERENT ways. You claim he is wrong but offer no explination for why the observers see the event happen differently.

@Manoo62 Most people agree that the speed of light is constant regardless your frame of reference. Einstein said a whole new theory was needed to explain this fact. I am saying that the reason the speed of light (not frequency ) is constant is exactly for the same reason the speed of sound is constant which I am glad you reminded me of. How can you be sure something you see in a video is true? Have you ever been to the movies?

@freshfreenlovinit The sound doesnt change speed as you say it just changes pitch (or wave length) due to the speed of the truck. Light is the same it doesnt change speed but the wave length changes so its blue comming towards you and red moving away. So light It is clearly effected when transmitted from a moving object. You are still left with the problem of explaining the different views of the same event in the video.......

@messierthirtyone The ship would take 8 min 20 seconds at 99% the speed of light so 16min 40sec to return (ignoring acceleration and turning). So the clock on earth would read 5:16:40 when you got back. However if you were on board the ship your clock would only say 5:02:22.

@Manoo62 The jets who fly faster than the speed of sound would never be able to "crash" through the sound barrier if the sound waves they generated also carried the momentum of the jet itself. |
